The Soweto Mathematics Olympiad is a regional mathematics competition for high school learners from grade 10 to 12. The aim of the competition is to encourage learners to develop problem-solving skills and a love for mathematics.
It provides a platform for young talent to be identified, nurtured and challenged, preparing future leaders in STEM fields. By promoting healthy competition and teamwork, the Olympiad aims to raise mathematics standards and awareness in Soweto.

Registration closed on 30 April 2026. Round 1 takes place on 9 May 2026. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Questions draw from the full South African high school mathematics curriculum, testing concepts learners have studied in class.
All assessments are written individually without calculators, rewarding mental agility, logical reasoning and mathematical intuition.
Round 1 on 9 May serves as a qualifier. Top performers advance to Round 2 on 11 July, where the champion is crowned.
03 — Awards
The learner who scores highest in the second round will take home R3,000 cash, along with the prestigious title of Soweto's Best Mathematician — and the bragging rights to match. Beyond the prize, the Olympiad recognises and nurtures young mathematical talent, creating a pathway into STEM careers.
